Kurd Lasswitz Preis - SF-ul de limba germană și-a anunțat nominalizările

Kurd Lasswitz Preis-reprezintă unul cele mai cunoscute premii de science-fiction din Germania și a fost creat în 1980. Este conceput după modelul premiului "Nebula" american si poartă numele autorului german de science-fiction Kurd Lasswitz. Juriul este alcătuit din autori, editori și traducători profesioniști.
Inițial premiul era decernat pentru 6 categorii diferite : «Cel mai bun roman sf», «Cea mai bună nuvelă sf», « Cea mai bună povestire scurtă sf », «Cel mai bun traducător sf », «Cel mai bun ilustrator sf» și «Premiul special» la care s-au adăugat «Cel mai bun roman străin sf» (în 1983) și «Cel mai bun film sf» și «Cea mai bună piesă radiofonică sf» (în 1987).
Dintre autorii premiați cu renumitul Kurd Lasswitz Preis amintim : Wolfgang Jeschke, Andreas Eschbach, Hans Joachim Alpers, Carl Amery, Herbert W. Franke, Ian McDonald, Michael Marrak, Connie Willis.

Writer Arthur C Clarke dies at 90


British science fiction writer Sir Arthur C Clarke has died in Sri Lanka at the age of 90.
Born in Somerset, he came to fame in 1968 when a short story The Sentinel was made into the film 2001: A Space Odyssey by director Stanley Kubrick.

Sir Arthur's vision of future space travel and computing captured the popular imagination.

An aide said he died at 0130 local time in what had become his adopted homeland after a cardio-respiratory attack.

A farmer's son, Sir Arthur was educated at Huish's Grammar School in Taunton before joining the civil service.

World Space Week Association (WSWA), founded in 1981, is one of the world's oldest space education organizations. Today it is the proud partner of the United Nations in the global coordination of World Space Week. WSWA recruits and supports a worldwide network of coordinators and participants. This non-government, non-profit, international organization is based in Houston, Texas, USA.


Exploring the Universe


The theme for World Space Week 2008 is "Exploring the Universe" This theme encourages participants to reflect during World Space Week on the space as the next frontier. Exploration can take many forms, from scientific discovery to human colonization. From space, we learn not only about astronomy, but we learn about Earth in many ways. As the next frontier, space offers bountiful resources of energy and materials, as well as a path for permanent human expansion off of our home planet Earth.
All World Space Week participants are requested to:
1) Plan World Space Week programs that address this theme in some way
2) Incorporate this theme into all of your World Space Week publicity materials
Each year's theme provides broad guidance to World Space Week participants on the content of their programs. The theme is selected to increase the impact of World Space Week on all humanity. Further, by using a uniform theme globally, World Space Week demonstrates unprecedented global cooperation in space. The theme is selected by the World Space Week Association Board of Directors in close coordination with the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs. Compliance with the theme is not required but is encouraged.

Tom Hunter, administrator for the Arthur C. Clarke Award told SFcrowsnest, "The announcement of a new Clarke Award shortlist is always a highlight of the UK's science fictional calendar, and this year's list, featuring an all UK line-up of top authors, promises to continue this trend."

"Featuring visions as diverse as a dystopian Cumbria and a future Hackney, time-travel adventures in 1960's Liverpool and an alternate world British Isles in the throes of terrorist attack, through to tech-noir thrillers and a trawl through subconscious worlds where memories fall prey to metaphysical sharks, the Clarke Award has never been so close to home and relevant to the British literary scene."

"The Clarke Award has always been about pushing at the speculative edges of its genre. It's one possible map amongst many, never the whole territory, and this year's shortlist stands as both the perfect introduction to the state of modern science fiction writing as well as a first tantalising glimpse of possible futures to come."

The judging panel for the 2008 Arthur C. Clarke Award are Niall Harrison and Claire Weaver for the British Science Fiction Association, Pat Cadigan and Francis Spufford for the Science Fiction Foundation and Pauline Clarke for the science fiction website SF Crowsnest.com. Paul Billinger represents the Arthur C. Clarke Award as the Chair of Judges.

This is the first Clarke Award shortlist to include a YA novel - The H-Bomb Girl by Stephen Baxter. The shortlist also features two first time novelists, Matthew de Abaitua and Steven Hall. This is only the second shortlist to be made up of all UK authors in the Award's history. The first time was in 2006.

A prize of £2008 will be awarded to the winner along with a commemorative engraved bookend.

The annual award is presented for the best science fiction novel of the year, and selected from a list of novels whose UK first edition was published in the previous calendar year.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday 30th April at an award ceremony held on the opening night of the Sci-Fi-London Film Festival: See www.sci-fi-london.com

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien a rămas orfan de tată la numai 4 ani, iar apoi în 1904 și-a pierdut și mama, deci a cunoscut cum este să ai o familie, ce înseamnă s-o pierzi și cât de greu este s-o duci de unul singur. La 17 ani, el s-a îndrăgostit de Edith Mary Bratt, o altă orfană, dar, întrucât s-a lăsat pe tânjală și și-a neglijat studiile, a pierdut o bursă la Oxford. Părintele iezuit Francis Xavier Morgan, cel "de-al doilea tată", a intervenit ferm, i-a interzis să o întâlnească pe Edith până când va împlini vârsta majoratului (21 de ani) și l-a sfătuit să aștepte, să aibă întâi o pâine în mână, drept care cei doi îndrăgostiți s-au căsătorit șapte ani mai târziu, în 22 martie 1916.

Îmi aduc vag aminte, că a fost o vreme când mă deplasam pe deasupra, stăpânit de dispreț pentru toată această colcăială vegetală. "Ridică macheta — taie — un pas..." Din cabina elicopterului, întreaga junglă părea apa tulbure a unui lac încrețit de valuri ușoare. "Niciodată să nu încerci să afli ce se ascunde în adâncurile sale!", spusese odată Jeremy, unde e acum Jeremy?, păi vezi, ăsta-i șpilul, Jeremy nu mai e, nici măcar scheletul său nu mai există, oasele i-au fost roase de fiare, să nu mai vorbim de țesuturi, mă întreb: "oare ce, sau cine, i-a mâncat ochii?". I-a mâncat?! Păi, sigur, aici orice se asimilează, se devorează, până la urmă totul ajunge vegetație. Jeremy, ochii tăi verzi mă privesc încrustați în frunzele arborilor și mâinile tale-liane le tai cu macheta."Ridică — taie — un pas — ridică — taie — un pas..."Undeva, prin apropiere, o fiară urlă sinistru, jungla e plină de foșnete, trosnituri înfundate, fluierături, miresme putrede și umezeală, mai ales umezeală. De pretutindeni și din orice ies aburi subțiri ca niște fuioare, pierzându-se printre frunzele ciudate ale arborilor. Asta când nu plouă, ceea ce însă se întâmplă foarte des și, caracteristic acestor meleaguri blestemate, absolut imprevizibil. Atunci nu mai ies aburi, totul e înecat de potop, dacă nu ai un adăpost trebuie să-ți protejezi nasul, altfel nu poți respira.

IN MEMORIAM CONSTANTIN COZMIUC - Societatea Viitorilor de Tinut Minte

După decembrie 1989, lumea a răsuflat ușurată că a scăpat de o belea și a încercat să se protejeze de cele viitoare, luând politicul în răspăr. Scriitorul Ștefan Cazimir a fondat Partidul Liber-Schimbist, care l-a propulsat în Parlament, o dovadă că românii gustă glumele inteligente. Tinerii "cu sânge în peniță" au editat primul "săptămânal de moravuri grele": "Cațavencu". Tot atunci, în Timișoara revoluționară, scriitorul Constantin Cozmiuc și prietenii săi de la "Gazeta de Vest" (fostul "Forum Studențesc") au creat, cu multă voie bună, Societatea Viitorilor Deținuți Politici.

Constantin Cozmiuc, căruia toată lumea îi spunea Coco, s-a afirmat după debutul în fanzinul "Paradox '83", unde a apărut povestirea "Păpușarii", scrisă împreună cu Emilian Blănariu. Primul premiu a fost cel de la Consfătuirea anuală a cenaclurilor de anticipație, pentru povestirea "Colții tăioși ai speranței", Cluj, 1984; au urmat apoi premiul special al juriului pentru povestirea "Așteaptă-mă în visul de mâine", la Concursul de literatură și artă de anticipație, Lugoj, 1985 ; Premiul I pentru nuvela "Maidanul cu extraterestri", Iași, 1986; Premiul special al juriului pentru povestirea "Timpul este umbra noastră", Craiova, 1987; Premiul revistei "Știință și tehnică", pentru literatura de anticipație, pe anul 1987; Premiul pentru povestirea "Șopronul cu neuristori", Pitești, 1988 și, tot pentru povestire, 1989, Timișoara.

În biografia lui Horia Aramă, cea succint consemnată în „Dicționarul SF” de la Nemira, găsim de la început un element de o stranietate aparte, ca o pălărie aruncată pe capul lui Venus din Milo, o fundă înfoiată legată de călușul viorii unui solist de prima-mână sau o cămilă adusă lângă piramida de sticlă de lângă Louvre-ul parizian: ceva absolut normal în contextul original, acceptat, care se transformă în altceva, un fapt surprinzător, prin ineditul unei asocieri ieșite din comun, în cazul nostru, comunitatea creatorilor și iubitorilor de science-fiction și calitatea de „absolvent al Școlii de Literatură Mihai Eminescu”. ***
