UIA Gold Medals and Prizes : Results of the 2008 session of the UIA prizes

In order to encourage merit, talent, or action with an international impact, the International Union of Architects awards a series of prizes every three years, on the occasion of its World Congress of Architects. Each of the four UIA prizes is dedicated to a specific theme and bears the name of the one of the first UIA Presidents.


Auguste Perret Prize
for applied technology in architecture
Sir Patrick Abercrombie Prize
for town planning and territorial development
Jean Tschumi Prize
for architectural criticism and/or architectural education
Sir Robert Matthew Prize
for the improvement in the quality of human settlements.





JURY
The 2008 jury session took place in Bratislava, on 16 and 17 April 2008. Chaired by Gaëtan Siew, UIA President, it was composed as follows: Jordi Farrando (Spain), UIA Secretary General, Donald J. Hackl (USA), UIA Treasurer, Louise Cox (Australia), UIA 1st Vice-President, Martin Drahovsky (Slovakia), 2nd Vice-President, Giancarlo Ius (Italy), Mauricio Rivero Borrell (Mexico), Seif Alnaga (Egypt) Vice-Presidents, Wolf Tochtermann (Germany), Director of the UIA International Competitions Commission.

WINNERS
2008 Auguste Perret Prize : Françoise-Hélène Jourda (France)
Her work is highly convincing by its maturity and astonishing rigour, a powerful architectural synthesis between spatial and constructive elements. The innovative use of construction materials and the high design quality makes her contribution to contemporary architecture particularly significant.

2008 Jean Tschumi Prize - Ex-aequo
Luca Molinari (Italy)
His professional career is dedicated to theoretic research, teaching, criticism and the history of architecture. His publications transmit architecture with talent, and a scientific and curatorial approach. Young, but very qualified in his field.

Escola Sert – COAC (Spain)
The continuing education system of the College of architects of Catalonia’s Escola Sert proposes high level state of the art courses to architects. The system is a pioneering initiative able to go much beyond its initial territorial scope. Through the use of innovative technologies it shows a capacity to easily provide courses to a large number of architects on a complete range of sujects.

2008 Sir Patrick Abercrombie Prize – Ex æquo
Sir Peter Hall (United Kingdom)
Has devoted his professional life to the study of the world’s cities from every angle - economic, demographic, cultural and managerial. Going far beyond the simple relationship between the buildings, he considers all the urban elements that contribute to the quality of life in the cities.

Impressed by his distinguished record of honours and accomplishments that mark his career, the jury expressed its gratitude for his legacy of principles to current and future town planners.

Mahmoud Yousry Hassan (Egypt)
His long academic career and his exceptional realisations in the field of town planning in Egypt and the Middle East draw the jury’s admiration. He founded and directed between 1979 and 1992 the Faculty of Urban and Regional Planning at Cairo University where he was the first to introduce the notion of urban design.

The 2008 Sir Robert Matthew Prize was not awarded.
A mention was awarded to the Government of Catalonia, for its pragmatic approach in a series of urban rehabilitation and development projects that that propose small scale interventions in specific areas within the existing urban fabric.
