ILUSTRARTE 2009 IV Biennial International Exhibition of Children's Book Illustration Lisbon Portugal

A competition, a biennial exhibition ILUSTRARTE is an opportunity to bring together, every two years, children's books illustrators, originals, editors, collectors and readers of all ages.

Thanks to a massive participation of illustrators from all over the world, almost 1500 candidates from 60 countries, ILUSTRARTE 2007 has clearly reached its purposes:
- to promote illustration of children’s books as a form of art.
- to create a space and an opportunity to see and discuss the world’s best illustration.
- to establish Portugal as one of the world’s leading centres, promoting children’s books illustration.

The members of the jury, Anthony Browne (ENGLISH, ILLUSTRATOR), Christian Bruel (FRENCH, PUBLISHER), Barbara Scharioth (GERMAN, FORMER DIRECTOR OF IYL), João Vaz de Carvalho (PORTUGUESE, WINNER OF ILUSTRARTE 2005) and Ju Godinho (PORTUGUESE, CURATOR OF ILUSTRARTE), awarded the Ilustrarte 2007 Grand Prix to Susanne Janssen (GERMANY) and 3 special mentions to Martin Jarrie (FRANCE), Isabelle Vandenabeelle (BELGIUM) and Chiara Carrer (ITALY).
50 illustrators were selected to the exhibition, from November 2007 to January 2008.
